St Mary’s RC Primary School in Swinton wanted to transform its school hall with a series of bespoke displays that would celebrate the school’s Catholic identity while reinforcing its values and sense of community.
The project centred around four school house displays, each representing one of the Marian apparitions that the houses are named after: Fatima, Knock, Lourdes and Walsingham. Alongside these, the school wanted a striking display showcasing its mission statement and five core values – Love, Respect, Faith, Inspire and Achieve, together with a large Hail Mary prayer display to create a meaningful focal point at the front of the hall.
The aim was to create a collection of displays that reflected the school’s ethos while transforming the hall into a vibrant, inspiring space used daily for assemblies, worship and whole-school events.
Working closely with the school, we developed a bespoke illustration style inspired by traditional stained glass windows, using vibrant colours and intricate detailing to reflect the significance of each Marian apparition. Each house display was carefully illustrated to depict its individual story while incorporating the school’s designated house colours, creating a distinctive identity for every team.
To enhance the overall effect, we introduced a subtle stained glass texture across each illustration, adding depth and realism while reinforcing the appearance of authentic stained glass. This gave each display a rich, vibrant finish that complements the school’s Catholic heritage. The same visual style was carried through the mission statement and values display, creating a cohesive identity across the hall. We also designed a large Hail Mary prayer display, positioned at the front of the hall to provide a striking focal point for assemblies, collective worship and moments of reflection.
The completed displays have transformed the school hall into a welcoming and inspiring space that celebrates St Mary’s Catholic identity while reinforcing its values and house system. By combining bespoke illustration, meaningful storytelling and a consistent stained glass-inspired design, the displays create a strong visual identity that pupils see every day. The hall now provides an environment that reflects the school’s faith, celebrates its community and leaves a lasting impression on pupils, staff and visitors alike.
